High-end condos going up

A new deluxe condominium project has broken ground in Kenora. Located on Tunnel Island on the former staff house property once owned by the Kenora paper mill, the $40 million, 80-unit project broke ground this past fall.

The developer, Winnipeg-based Qualico Developments, has named the project The Headwaters as the site is at the entrance to the central branch of three branches that lead from Lake of the Woods to the Winnipeg River.

The units are aimed at the higher end of the real estate market.

“It represents the best of the best for Qualico,” noted project manager Barry Hedgecock at a ground breaking ceremony held in October.

In addition to top quality materials through to “fit and finish”, energy conservation and “green” technology are key components of the building design.

Units in the five complexes to be sited on the waterside property on Lakeview Drive, will be priced from $400,000 and up and will range from 1,000 sq. feet to 2,100 sq. feet in size. Large balconies, docking facilities and boat slips are key features of the development, along with a spectacular view of the water along the nearly 1,000 metres of shoreline the property features along Safety Bay and the entrance branch to the Winnipeg River.

Site preparation and clearing work began in the fall and will resume in March after a break for the winter. Building construction will follow at a pace that will be based on pre-sales activity and will eventually include four nine-unit complexes and a 44-unit complex.
