The Future

The Lake of the Woods region has been recognized as one of the world's most naturally beautiful locations - and its preservation will be paramount as the future unfolds.

A history to be preserved. A future to be celebrated.

In 1999, the towns of Kenora, Keewatin and Jaffray Melick (which merged in 2000) were presented with the Canadian Forestry Association’s Forest Capital of Canada Award, recognizing the community for its commitment to, dependence on and celebration of forest resources. There was a movement to commemorate the honour with a Legacy Project on Tunnel Island, and this was made possible by the generous donation of the property by Abitibi Consolidated Inc.

The Tunnel Island Legacy Project, now known as the Common Ground, is a partnership between the City of Kenora and Grand Council Treaty #3. When the project is completed, the island will offer a comprehensive trail system presenting a variety of levels of challenge, including a portion of the Trans Canada Trail and links to the Kenora harbourfront. A substantial Interpretive Centre will provide educational exhibits, displays and programs celebrating the ecology, cultural heritage and forest legacy of this important site. www.ratportage.com

The Headwaters is located directly south of the Common Ground and is not only well situated to share in this historic and educational resource, but is also assured that development north of The Headwaters will be restricted to this ecological and forest legacy.
